Matthew McConaughey Scores New Role
Not only do Josh Lucas and Matthew McConaughey look alike, but now they're playing very similar roles.
Hot off the heels of Lucas's Glory Road, in which he played a basketball coach, Matthew has signed on to an untitled Warner Bros. production in which he will play a football coach. But not just any football coach, folks. The football coach of my alma mater: Marshall University. (Go Herd!)
The movie will be based on a real-life event that happened in 1970, when most of Marshall's football team -- including players, coaches, sports commentators and local boosters -- were killed in a plane crash. Matthew will play Jack Lengyel, who was signed as Marshall's football coach in 1971 and tried to rebuild the team with a small amount of surviving teammates.
During my tenure at Marshall, NFL hotshots Chad Pennington, Randy Moss and Byron Leftwich were on the team.
Bongo-playing party boy Matthew will have the best time filming the flick, which will shoot in part on the Marshall campus in Huntington, West Virginia, and the surrounding area.
I can't wait to start hearing about all the Matthew sightings at my posse's former haunts. He should check out Hank's (late-night drinks), Giovanni's (late-night pizza), Icon (late-night music courtesy of Fuller) and, of course, the famed Rebels & Redcoats Tavern, where you can eat, drink and bowl a round next door at Colonial Lanes. Watch out for the Rebels owner though, she's a bit of hellion.
Be sure to tell 'em I sent ya, Matty.

Matthew McConaughey could sit in the middle of a potato field clipping his toenails and I'd watch.
I think we were at Marshall around the same time....I was in the theater dept....I wonder if any of my old friends still living in Huntington will be involved.
I SAW THE STORY ABOUT THAT SCHOOL ON PBS, THE STORY WAS CALLED "ASHES TO GLORY". WHAT A GREAT INSPIRATION.
Julie: Where are you from? And what years did you go to Marshall?
GO Thundering Terd!!!!
Go herd!
Sorry Suzy Under-p... think R&R closed their doors a few years back... not too mention Mycrofts and Calamity... Sniff Sniff... still quarter drafts at the Union and a newly opened Hooters. For the alums in NYC, there's always Diablos... at least Until Penn State alums find the place...
Rebel's is still open. It's a bar now! You must not know our friend Amy Neighborgall, who owns it. She's a legend.
GO HERD
I stand Corrected. My 2006 'Lonely Planet' Travel Guide for Huntington must have been swiped by the oddly jovial homeless guy that haunts the front entrance of my building. Tell Amy (won't you be my) Neighborall to buy/reopen Dwights... I want some waffles...
Hey, "Hey Everybody It's Jon",
Get with it, Rebels closed as a restaurant but now runs as a bar. Know your H-town. Damn.
Hmmm-these names sound familiar! I bet the movie is great. This is one I need to see and I don't like football movies Suzy!
I wonder who to get in contact with about being an "extra" in the movie?
Go Thundering TERDS!!!
If anyone knows how to become an extra on this film please mlet me know at saundersmu@adelphia.net
Did you go to Marshall, Chris?
I was at MU around the same time -- print journalism '97. Did you know that Calamity has closed. *sniffs*
Btw, you "Thundering Terds" people are sooooooo original. Did your momma help you type that?
ANOTHER LOST FLIGHT: Matthew Fox has sealed up his plans for summer hiatus, and this time he's taking on a real-life airline tragedy. The Lost star has signed on to join Matthew McConaughey in Charlie's Angels director McG's as-yet-untitled big-screen drama about the 1970 plane crash that killed members of the West Virginia-based Marshall University football team, most of its coaching staff and many others. Both Matthews will play team coaches.
I went to Marshall University for both undergrad and grad school and was an R.A. in Hodges Hall a couple years at about the same time as the original poster (Leftwich/Pennington era). Definitely looking forward to this movie. I just hope they do it justice filming the bulk of the production in Huntington and avoiding any WV stereotyping. BTW, the old 1971 locker room is now the Marshall University forensic science center/CODIS.
Chris "print journalism '97" -- I was broadcast journalism 97... What was that chicks name -- crazy lady professor? She drove me crazy. Loved Prof. Jensen though.
THUNDER CLAP!!! When I came back for homecoming this year I was telling a friend of mine about the Thunder Clap. He was like -- Oh, that's what that is? Must be hysterical to see that and have no idea what kind of crazy cult-like action it is.
I loved when the Ronald McDonald would do the Thunder Clap too!!!
Perhaps it would be a lot easier determining the identity of each poster if last names were included...?
how can i become an extra?
Marshall has set up a hotline for people to leave information about yourself for extras and all that stuff. the number is 304-696-3461 leave your name and a phone number
I'm so stoked about this film. I live in Greeville, NC home of ECU and I attended Marshall. I can't wait for the the film to come out. Great story and sounds like a great cast. Go Herd!!!!
Having attended Marshall University beginning in 1967 this sad story should touch the hearts of many. Glad someone is telling the story and hope Matthew McConihay can capture the spirit of our class back then. The accident tore up the hearts of the whole campus!
I began at MU the Fall of 1971--I was a freshman when the rebuilding began. I remember it well -attended every home game and it didn't matter if we won or lost-- the team played for those who lost their lives. Sorority sisters and cheerleaders lost their parents; a freshman football player lost his brother--but chose to attend Marshall to honor his brother's memory. Everyone on campus was impacted. Dan, Bob, Kelly..the list goes on of all of those who will forever be remembered for carrying on the torch.
The local hangouts in the 70's were The Varsity and Boney's COnfectionary -- aka Boney's Hole in the Wall! Hopping places back then!
I saw where somebody said Calamity shut down. That's a bummer the atmosphere was really cool. Does anybody have the new names to some of the old bars in Huntington during the early to mid 90s?
Rebels and Redcoats Tavern closed the doors 2 years ago.I work there from
1986-2004.I worked with Rick Reed's Dad
Don Reed.Rick Reed played professional baseball. He now is retired from professional baseball and is now Marshall's bsaeball pitching coach.
Rebels is OPEN. It's now a bar. Our friend owns it. We were there in October.
Chris "print journalism '97" -- I was broadcast journalism 97... What was that chicks name -- crazy lady professor? She drove me crazy. Loved Prof. Jensen though.
I can only think of Marilyn (the Parthenon adviser), Professor Dooley (advertising) and the photojournalism professor. Did you know Dr. Shaver died a couple of years ago? =.( Had a heart attack on the treadmill at the fitness center.
Bryan, I'm in Raleigh.
To NC1HerdFan: Who did you work with in journalism. A friend of mine was sports editor around that time period maybe you guys crossed paths. What part of Raleigh?
1994 Grad. Is Amy Neighborgal Jennifer Neighborgal's sister?
Yes, Amy and Jennifer are sisters...
You say it's a good movie...I hezitate.
Oh yeah, "The Hole"--I was there in '76.
Mathew joined hundreds of fans for dinner and playoff basketball at the Marshall Cafe on Saturday evening....
Yes Rebels and Redcoats is still open it is a bar. I was just there last week. As far as Matthew, goes we all would like to see him around town, perhaps he should checkout Remedies on 4th avenue and 15th street. This is were all my co-workers and I hang out after we get off work on Thursday nights @ 2 a.m.
This movie is going to be great and it should be a movie that marshall alumni and friends will be proud of. What a great cast! I don't think "we" could have asked for a better cast. Matt Fox is protraying Red Dawson-Receiver Coach.
Huntington was in a frenzy when Matthew M and Matt Fox were here. I got to meet Matthew M at Coach Pruett's Steak House. What a great guy!!!!
GO HERD!!!!!
Great blog! Hello Herd fans!
The filming of the movie has now moved to Atlanta. They are still looking for extras for several big scenes.
Marshall alumni are invited to a tailgate party before the filming of the Xavier game. It is currently scheduled for Saturday, June 10th.
For more information on the filming, go to www.marshall.edu/movie. Also, there are lots of pictures on the herald dispatch website www.herald-dispatch.com.

GO HERD!!!
It is great that they are telling this story on a much bigger scale! Are there really that many Herd fans in the NYC area? We all need to find a place to go watch Herd games on Saturdays (or I guess Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays :) )
GO HERD!! My wife and I were extras in the Keith Albee scene when people find out about the plane crash. When you watch it, if they don't cut us out, we are the couple that walks up to the ticket booth after Nate Ruffin and the composite character. I am also sitting behind Nate Ruffin in the movie theater. Should be able to see me a little in that scene. Can't wait!! GO HERD

I was the girl working the ticket booth at the Keith Albee the night of the crash. I was working there part-time while attending Marhshall University. It was a very, very sad night and I will never forget it as long as I live. .
