Winona Ryder Cops to her Arrest
"The attention was what was embarrassing," she tells the new issue of Vogue. "It was the December after Sept. 11. … So much attention was being paid to me, when we had just been attacked, and there was all this really important news going on."
Winona says that pills played a part in her breaking the law. "Two months prior to that, I broke my arm in two places, and the doctor … was giving me a lot of stuff, and I was taking it at first to get through the pain. And then there was this weird point when you don't know if you are in pain but you're taking it." She continues: "Have you ever taken painkillers? It isn't a reckless (state), like you're out of your head. It's just confusion."
The actress, who is making a comeback of sorts with three new movies coming out, says she made the conscious decision to lay off work after her arrest. She moved to San Francisco to live near her parents, who supported her through the tough time. "No one (in my family) ever got angry with me. Concerned, yes, but not concerned with a drug problem or anything. Because after that night I pretty much didn't ever. … If you are ever arrested, you can't ever do that again," she says.
I was always a big Winona fan. Reality Bites ranks up there on my list of favorite movies, so I'm glad to see the little lady has healed. And now, with cocaine and porn tape scandals flooding Tinseltown, Winona's little shoplifting incident is the tiniest blip on the celebrity crime radar.

Funny...I also broke my arm in two places once. I never once had to take a pain killer. Something about these people - they look for any excuse to pop pills. Dumb excuse for shoplifting if you ask me.

The shoplifting happened so long ago. People have to get a life. She paid her for dues, just let it go.

I have no opinion on Winona but that dress looks ridiculous on her. That style just doesn't go with her own look. She looks like a little girl whose mother dressed her up for the big party with all of the important guests from work coming. She definitely doesn't look 35!
EVERYONE has screwed up in their lives, and at least Ms. Ryder had the good grace to take a step back. I'm proud of you Winona, and very glad to see you back! CHEERS, EH?

I have no respect for her at all after that lame excuse for shoplifting. If she would have just owned up to what she did then maybe people would see her in a different light. She wasn't 20 when she did it either. She's jsut a messed up person. I once read an interview with her & she said at one point in her life she was tryign to be an alcoholic. That is one of the stupidist things I've ever heard anyone say. She's got problems far more than some pain killers that made her shoplift. please!
I'm so tired of celebrities telling us what we should be focusing on. We are all concerned about the war, but that doesn't mean we can't take an interest in someone who is a celebrity breaking the law. It just helps to show that even celebrities are not infallible.

Pls note, she doesn't discuss the shoplifting at all, the quote is about using 'prescribed' pain meds. Prescribed, I'm so annoyed with that term, if you don't know if you are in pain, the doc won't give you meds. I just had major surgery (not a pesky arm issue) and I had to have a through pain review before any prescription refill. I'm still in pain, but off meds because I didn't want to take them, also pain is an indicator and should be felt sometimes to avoid further damage.
In response to huh's comment about how he/she took no pain killers after a broken arm- I'm very happy for you, but many years ago, I fractured a wrist and I was constantly on painkillers for a week. I envy those who feel little pain...or want to seem macho on blogs.

I personally don't see the big deal about the painkillers, it is common to use pain relief, to me you are just more people looking to belittle someone in the public eye.
so, she shouldn't have done it - Saks 5th shouldn't charge so much for their crappy ass clothing/whatever, and you people should never take pain meds if YOU don't like them.

None of us are perfect, but there is no excuse whatever for shoplifting, and especially somebody who already has a lot of money. I hope she learned a very embarrassing lesson.

I miss Winona, she is one of my favorite actors. Personally I think she got a raw deal. Theft is not right no matter what excuse, but six years later every actress/actor you see in the media is either being arrested for drunk driving with or without drugs and is using rehab to gain good pr and stay out of jail, and it works, which really is twisted.. what a difference six years makes. Winona looks like an angel compared to some of the media hoâs out there now who think breaking the law is the first step to an a list career instead of hard work, which is a kick in the butt to those who really deserve it.

I don't believe they are still talking about Winona's shoplifting experience. So many other celebs have been arrested for far worse, like drinking and driving almost killing someone. Leave Winona alone and let her get on with her life. She's a gifted actress, the girl has talent....period. She made one dam mistake, get over it!!!!
