Celebrity Meltdown: Ryan Adams

RyanAdams.jpg
Celebrity meltdowns are as common as Paris Hilton has a new boyfriend stories. Obviously Britney Spears has been there, so have Mariah Carey, Russell Crowe, Anne Heche, Dave Chappelle and others. A new edition to the club? Rocker Ryan Adams, who, according to reports, "pitched a fit" for a Minneapolis audience.

Though he didn't shave his head during the show or throw a phone at someone in the audience, he was said to be bitching and moaning about the sound monitors and stopped the show at one point to move equipment. Seventy minutes after he started, he announced "last song," played it and didn't return for an encore.

"I don't know what the story was," guitarist Neal Casal told the Star Tribune afterward. "I just play guitar."

Now, to be accurate, this wasn't Ryan's first fit. He actually had another diva moment in 2003 back in the Minneapolis area. (What is it about Minnesota that makes him crazy? Maybe he takes issue with being in such close proximity to all the mall walkers?) That time, Ryan gave a famously bad performance ("a rambling two-hour show"), where he griped about the sound system, played several songs twice and lambasted local rock legend Paul Westerberg.

Well, that's it -- I'm putting my Ryan Adam tickets on Craig's List right now. Ha. Let's be honest... I didn't want to see him in concert before... and I definitely don't now.

I was at this show, and I honestly can't believe it's making such news outside of the Twin Cities. The show was definitely way too short and they seemed to be having sound issues, particularly with Ryan's vocals, but Ryan didn't "pitch a fit." He just left the stage and didn't come back.

Stuff like this comes with the territory of being a Ryan Adams fan. You don't exactly go to his concerts expecting professionalism. The frustrating part is, he can be absolutely brilliant...when he wants to be.

The Show last night was fantastic. Musically he sounded great and his voice sounded really good as well. There were some major mixing and monitor issues, and I know when he left the stage people were saying "well, thats Ryan Adams for ya" and it is true. However, I haven't gotten to see Ryan Adams before, he is one of my biggest musical inspirations and to see him just walk off like a 15 year old was incredibly annoying when I have been waiting around 4 years to see him live. He is a genious, and his music brilliant, there is no denying that. However, I felt a little robbed by the show last night and it makes me upset. I know he has this reputation and I know this type of stuff goes along with being a Ryan Adams fan, but thats just not professional. It's weak, lame, and awful that he would do that in a show where (even if the mix was bad) he was playing great songs with a great sound. Its just immature and Well, I guess that's Ryan Adams for ya

He's no Westerberg, although he really wishes he was...

We love Paul Westerberg. Then again, he's no stranger to his own moments at shows. I've seen him so drunk he misses big chunks of lyrics, mumbles incoherently, stumbles...ah, gotta love him & the 'placemats!

sorry, who is this guy? what song did he sing that i'd know?

Jay said:

If you had to ask what song you'd know, then yeah you wouldn't. He's not a trendy radio artist. He's one of the musicians that thinking, intelligent people listen to.

Where did he play - do any of y'all Mpls people know? So many of our concert halls have bad sound. I don't blame him for getting pissed.

Ryan is an incredible artist and his show is one of the best I've ever seen. You're definitely missing out.

brittis said:

jay that was rude. just because i asked a question doesn't mean that my intelligence should be questioned. you don't know me or what i listen to. that was just uncalled for.

cck said:

Jay:re.your comment to Brittis. that was really uncaled for. by the way, intelligent people do not want to watch an artist act like a baby, and walk off the stage.

who is he???????

Isn't it Bryan Adams?????? I am so confused!

I think Mr. Adams was just a little nervous about being in the backyard of his main musical influence. And I don't care what he might claim, Whiskeytown and Ryan owe A LOT of their musical sound to the Replacements and Mr. Westerberg. ("Yesterday's News" & "Revenge" are like long lost Replacements tunes.)

And having just saw Mr. Adams in Northampton a few weeks back, I can say his set was mindblowing. Almost two and a half hours, he was joking with audience and his band mates, and seemingly in a great mood. One of the best shows I've seen in a long while.

As for him "melting down"...sounds more like he was just having a bad day, and really, he amongst us who hasn't can cast the first stone.

He rocks!
The Mats rock!
All is good!

i love his music...love it... but i with they'd stop referring to him as a 'rock star' since his best stuff is definitely more 'country' than 'rock' .. and 'star'..come on... 'celebrity'? come on again lol
the man could walk down nearly any busy street in any major city and if one person recognized him i'd be very suprised...
that's not a criticism..i hate it when decent musicians get 'big' because that means the good music they were producing is about to end.....
honestly though...he's not a 'star' nor is he a 'celebrity'? he plays to 1000 people or so a gig.....

Great blog...keep it going

Wow, lets give him a hard time! Ryan Adams is more amazing than any of you. The fact that he spends all of his time making music that YOU listen to, then you bitch about one show is crazy. Get a life. Or, better yet, YOU try playing a show.
