I've watched Dave for many many years, and he's really just a big sweetheart of a guy. Not always the case in the early years, but especially since the heart surgery and the birth of Harry, it's very evident that he's just a big softie under all that self-depreciating humor! His true character was shown after 3 events; The attack on 9/11, his heart surgery and when Harry was born. If you saw those shows, you saw the real Dave. Happy Holidays to the Late Show staff and their families!

workingirl the writers want residuals from the sale of "boxed set" dvd sales of television series and revenues from internet viewings of their scripted material. they are not being selfish they just want what they deserve.

Dave has been in a relationship for years but I don't know if he ever got married. He has a young boy and comes from my home state of Indiana. I used to go over to Ball State and party way back when, which is where he attended college. Best I can do to answer your question, big fan. Maybe someone else knows.

Give me a break, in this country where many people don't even make a liveable wage working at two jobs, these people want more. They don't care if it costs others their wages, that in itself says it is about greed. As a former lead negotiator, I find it amusing that a person thinks unions and going out on strike is the only way to get their just due.
It's also very sad this country spends more in entertainment than for quality education for their own children. Teachers have to make do and try to educate at a disadvantage.
No one in this country should have to suffer low wages, poor working conditions, or fear of losing their job. That union can be broken, and then where will they be? No job at all. Ask the air traffic controllers in the 80's. Go to other states, and see where union representation only got them replaced with contracted labor. The precursor to outsourcing, and all because we let someone else speak and fight for us without educating ourselves to what they actually are representing.

Dave's got class! I think it's great he's helping out and taking care of his own peeps. I don't know if a strike is the best resort, especially at this time of year. Why didn't they do it during the summer when we were all watching reruns anyhow???

I think it is a very nice gesture on David Letterman's part, that he decided to pay the salaries for those employees that work on his show that are on strike. Very benevolent, good P.R., good Karma; and a good tax deduction. It is quite nice to see someone who makes as much money as he does as the "star" of the television production, think of all of the other people that are not stars; yet, those others that work as hard or harder at jobs that are vital to the production of the show make so little money. They certainly wouldn't be in a position to return the favor if David Letterman went on strike. Noble gesture Mr. Letterman!

I just wanted to point out that the writers went on strike on Nov 5 and they probably didn't anticipate it running through the holidays, esp. since they're not getting paychecks to buy their kids a Wii either. Even if they knew it would go on, the union's contract is renegotiated every three years (you know, for all of you "should have done it right the first time" people, to deal with issues like inflation and well-deserved raises). I don't think the union gets to pick the time they renegotiate the contract.

Finally, if you don't think a Hollywood makeup artist or camera person can't pick up a little cash doing weddings or theater while the writers are on strike, you're probably a dumbass. Sorry, but "The Night Show with David Letterman" is a pretty impressive resume booster. Really.

But anyway, yay for Dave and his generosity!
