Jamie Lynn Spears Gets Her GED

jamielynnged.jpg
Hey y'all -- Jamie Lynne Spears' baby is going to have one smart mama!

I am happy to report that young Jamie Lynn has passed her GED exam and is currently thinking about her future.

Britney's 16-year-old sister, who is pregnant, is said to have scored particularly well on the reading comprehension part of high school equivalency test – and is looking to take the ACT college entrance test.

"She's already got her diploma," a friend of Jamie's told People.com. "She wants to take her ACT. She's not wasting any time. People don't know her. When she gets something in her head, she'll make it happen. Everybody is so supportive of her."

Jamie Lynn is said to be interested in attending Louisiana State University.

I hope that baby likes frat parties.

GED, you really have to try your hardest NOT to get that accomplished. GED is a definete "walk in the park" in comparison to regular High School education. If she was dedicated she would have been attentind AP (advanced placement) courses to help her get units for whichever 4 year University she would attend. Maintain an average of 3.7 and graduate with honors. But what am I talking about, GED is just fine as is, but not a diploma mind you. GED was set up for the people that where having difficulty in school, be it family matters, illness, monetary problems, etc etc. Yet she was too busy working to make the big money to concern herself with a proper education, Im sure if she attended a sensible "Family Life" type class she would have had some sense in using protection. Am I been harsh? Yes. She had every oportunity to be something more than her mother's puppet and sex toy for some undisclosed man... but she did not. So I see no point in praising her in acquiring a GED. I would rather praise the few that stuck through school and made it to the end, or praise the few that have had a hard life that came BACK to get a GED. Not her.

Frank, wtf are you talking about? The GED was at one point a "walk in the park" as you put it, but the test has become much more rigorous in recent years and is no longer a guarantee. Do your research before you start spouting off unfounded opinions. No, it's not a diploma, but what the hell does Jamie need AP credits for when she can afford to pay for all the classes she wants to take in college if she so chooses? An even better option for her given her situation would be two years of community college so that she can stay at home and then transfer to a four year school. At that point, high school credits and GPA are no longer looked at as long as she does well with her community college courses. As you noted, the GED is designed for people who are having difficulties. I believe that a teen pregnancy fits those qualifications exactly. For many teen mothers, a GED is their best option. I think we SHOULD praise her for taking the opportunity to better herself now rather than cast judgment on her for not following some rigid path to success that we have mapped out in our own heads.

I totally agree with Kim. Frank you are so harsh. The girl had a rough time. At least she is trying to do something and not saying "I have a ton of money, so why even get any education. It is people like you that make it hard for people to go through school. You are mean and judgemental and need to get off your high horse. I am happy she is trying. That right there shows courage. Because she has the gumption to go back and finish, she sets a good example for her child.

I tought GED. Enough said.

Frank said:

I used to teach GED in an adult school. So I believe I have some say so. As for the test been more difficult, are you kidding? Depending on how many people pass or fail, the test gets adjusted to meet a quota. Yes, a quota. If too many people pass the test changes, if too may people fail, again the test changes. The new portfolio requirement is nothing more of a collection of the work you have done over the year/semester. Its not even a thesis in MLA format for petes sake. It is a "walk in the park" if you simply attend and do your work. The majority of the high school students that attended while I was teaching where very nonchallant about their education. Attendance was the bulk of their grading. Effort and what not was the silent manner of grading.

I even said I was been harsh in my previous post. And buying your way into an university isn't the same as those that work their ass off to get accepted. The ones that apply for scholarships, grants, or loans just to get in. And then work partime to pay for other necessities to survive in academia.

I don't even include the ones that go on a sport scholarship either.

It was so dissapointing to see the lack of character in so many students that I decided to persue a different career.

Frank, tought or taught?

Anyway, she might have used protection, but it didn't work. It happens. She could also say, "hey, I'm rich and I don't need an education." She is not saying that though. How would you like to be a 16 year old girl, pregnant and Britneys sister to boot in a regular high school? Teens are so mean and ugly these days. I commend her for doing more than she has to. Good job to Jamie-Lynn.

Renee said:

Frank ~ You "tought" GED? Do you mean taught? Did you teach the English as a second language class? It's obvious from your first post...you can't spell...use poor grammar...and can't compose a decent response. Maybe you should GED again, just to brush up on the basics!

Frank said:

Oh please, if you can not tell a typographical error when you see one there is not much I can do about that. So have your field day as a "Nazi Grammar Trooper", I care not for your retort when all you have on me is a spelling error.

So go on, ridicule me on a spelling error. I'm sure it will make you feel quite the admirable person.

English is my second language. And I did graduate with honors, not that any of you really care. I "taught" for five years till I decided to move on.

I love how in this forum a person who takes the time to comment is assaulted for a spelling error. Yet the other posters that misuse quotations or cosntantly use caps and run on about the evil of greed become celebreties.

So yes, I admit, I used a word incorrectly, my apologies.

Seems to me that who ever disagrees with Frank probably didn´t finish high school themselves, let alone go to college.

Sorry but I tend to agree with him. A GED is no replacement for a high school education if you´re 16. Even if you are pregnant. This seems to be a (successful) publicity stunt. On the positive side at least I´d rather hear about this which is somewhat more positive then the latest stupidity of her sister.

As for Frank´s spelling error, who cares? People make typos all the time on forums and to jump all over that is just lame. Esp when his grammar is much better than most of the posters on these celeb popcorn sites.

My daughter was pregnant at age 16 and only in 10th grade at the time. She didn't have time to finish high school and take AP classes while having an infant. She took her SAT and scored very high and then obtained her GED and scored the highest possible score in the state of New York. Because of the high SAT score, she was awarded a scholorship by the state to NYU. She now attends Univ of PA medical school. Just because a person earns a GED doesn't mean they aren't intelligent. It's just the easiest path to graduating. Kudo's to Jamie Lynne Spears for getting her degree and don't the best for her life and child.

HELLoise said:

I am dumb as dirt, and I never finished Jr. High scool. I used to sleep with any and evry guy I could. I admire Jamie Lynn for getting pregnant at 16. Why should anyone use condoms? Sorry for pointing out your spelling Frank. I am no better then Jamie Lynn. I couldnt pass the GED. I figured I would whore my way to da top like she did.

Why do people always have something bad to say about these posts? Geez, if you don’t like it, then don’t read. That simple.

Frank said:

Apparently people are missing the point. GED was set up for people like Kathy's daughter (which by the way, kudos for her). Or other people that have had to stop attending school say because a death in the family, economical hardships, illness, or other nasty life circumstances.

Jamie Lynn has/had every single opportunity that her "fame" has brought to her, and for her to just wing it on GED is what I am not praising.

HELLoise I agree with your earlier comment. At least she obtained a degree and can go to any community college with a GED. What are these other folk thinking? 16 years old and in 10th grade, she'd need her mother or another adult to look after the infant while she completes the next two years of high school. She's far enough along in her pregnancy that she wouldn't be able to complete 10th grade for God's sake. I believe she did the best thing for her and the baby. People make lame comments because they've never had to walk in somebody else's shoes.

Might I add, too, that it is you who is being stupid! This poor (Britney Spears) girl has real mental and mood disorders than are far beyond her control and you are going to criticze her for that? It's called Post Partem Depression and Bi-Polar Disorder.

So, now tell me..........what's the excuse behind your stupidity?

I have to agree with "Frank"...A lot of people have no choice but to take a "GED"...I believe "Jamie Lynn" is a "foolish" young girl that had more "opportunities" than most young girls do...She followed in the "footsteps" of her "big sis"...She probably should have waited to make "100 million" first like her "sis"...Now she will end up in the "Jamie Lynn who"? catagory..."I mean" how much money could "Zoey" have made her...She could have been so much "more", but I guess she will learn that "lesson" in a few months...

And Frank, thank you. It's been a tough road to this point. I'm very proud of my daughter. When my daughter was 16 years old when her father, a seemingly healthy man at age 45, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. It was a shock to us. She was an only child. She had just suffered the loss of her grand parents that same year. So she obviously couldn't handle the news and on the day of her father's death, two months later, revealed she was little over six weeks pregnant. I had to handle the news of being a widow and grand mother in the same day. Since she was an honor student, the obvious route was to take her SAT's and get her GED. The guidance office tried to talk her into staying in high school and taking the AP classes as a gateway to college. Obtaining her GED was the correct decision for her but perhaps not for all girls. We had no other choice since we depend on my income to support the family. We didn't have the option of baby sitters. God has seen us through many rough times. We now have a beautiful addition to our family. A little girl who looks amazingly like her grand father. If Jamie Lynne stays on the right path and stays devoted to her child and child's future, they'll be fine.

I agree with Frank! Yes, it's good that Jamie Lynne decided to continue on with her education BUT she got herself in the position she's in, so I can't applaud her for it. Let's save the cheering and pats on the back for those who really deserve it. Jamie Lynne falls into the "just another baby having a baby" category, it doesn't make her a wonder kid just because she's gone and continued on with schooling. If she was that smart, she wouldn't be 16 and pregnant! People will probably come in with their negative comments with me saying that, but if everyone was honest enough, they'd surely have to admit that it's not the best thing, having a child at that age!! At that age you should be behaving like a child yourself, not bringing one into the world!

I completed my GED and it was not easier or harder than my high school classes and it does not categorize me at stupid or less intelligent than others who have graduated the traditional way...I had to take classes and write the final exams and I went on to University and have a very successful career today. I am 28 years old and have a management position with the number one employer in my country. A GED means little, just as a high school diploma means very little in the professional world. I think that we are so quick to judge people that we forget to take the logs out of our own eyes. This girl is doing the best that she can right now, she is not exactly surrounded by the most stable people.

Kathy said:

I completely agree!

Frank said:

My comment isn't that people that "honestly" take GED are less intelligent or capable than those that get a high school diploma.

I was pin-pointing Jamie Lynn's situation as the basis of my initial comment. In all aspects she had the opportunity to do so much more than she did. And saying that her family is unstable isn't much of a scapegoat, considering that there are many other families that are far more unstable and whose childred still manage to get a diploma. Each case is an individual scenario, and since I have limited space I have to make my statements using general status quo examples.

And doing GED is, as far as I remember it to be, easier than high school considering it is a compacted "crash" course type of classes. In high school most students put in about 7 hours, while in GED courses it is compacted to 2 to 4 hours a day. This was done for those that have to work to support themselves and/or their families.

In my personal experience I was mandated by the principal to keep my curriculum in "k.i.s.s" format. When I heard that I was confused so asked him what that meant. This is what the principal told me: "Keep it simple stupid". Much to my disillusionment, he was not kidding.

As I said before, GED was implemented for those that for many reasons could not finish high school by normal means. Death in the family, illness, economy, etc. Jamie Lynn only has to deal with a pregnancy, not economical hardships, death in the family, illness, or any other circumstance in life that can hinder the best of us. Yes been pregnant is a very big deal, it does change your life, and it is a big responsibility. But I don't see her as a typical teenager to begin with, in her line of work she is exposed to so much more than a regular teenager would. And she had her sister as an example of what "not" to do. She chose this path, it isn't as if she was swindled, fooled, or manipulated... I really doubt that she was, call it gut instinct. Some of you say that she perhaps took precautions and that the contraceptive failed... all I hear is "16 year old having sex". Does it happen? Yes. It does. But only because it happens often it does not make any more correct to do so. That falls into the "everybody does it" type discussion, that we all know is fallible and dumb.

But, in retrospect, I do apologize to anyone who honestly took GED to make something of their lifes, in no way or form did I intend to insult your dedication to your betterment of your life.

i believe everyone should have the right to chose weither they want to stay in school to get a diploma or get a GED. I think people need to stop critizing what other people does or does not do. i think jamie lynn really cares about her education otherwise she wouldn't have made that decision to get the GED. I think since she already has a career as an actress, i'm sure if she ever what to do something else she would need to have at least passed high school to show them she can read and write.
