Kanye West Picks Up Grammys, Honors Mom
I'm sure it was a tough -- but great -- night for Kanye West, who gave an electric performance of "Stronger", followed by an emotional performance of "Hey Mama".
The superstar picked up awards for best rap album, rap song, best rap solo performance, and was listed with Common for best rap performance for a duo or group for Common's "Southside", but it was his tribute to his mom that really made him shine.
"I know you're really proud of me right now," he directed towards his late mom, Donda West, during his acceptance speech, with the word "Mama" shaved into his head. "And I know you wouldn't want me to stop and you want me to be the No. 1 artist in the world, and Mama, all I'm going to do is keep making you proud. We run this!"
Watch his performance above -- so good, so sad, so talented.

I'm truly sorry that he lost his Mother (that is a pain that I do not understand), but this man is obnoxious. I loved it when Vince Gill was getting his Grammy from Ringo Starr and said "hey Kanye, bet you never got anything from a Beatle" (or something along that line). Kanye smiled his fake smile and was probably just simmering inside his head that someone would call him out like that. I LOVED IT.....
he made the most touching tribute to his mom. that's all i could say.
The whole show was over the top, I couldn't figure out whether it was the GRAMMY'S or an award show for drugged out singers and afro-americans. To reward a heroin addict with 5 grammies sends the wrong message to the youth of america, this world has become upside down, if your talented nothing else matters. I like Kanye but he needs to get over himself. In my humble opinion, it was the worst awards show I've ever turned off early.
I didn't watch but I think Kanye needs to get over himself. This wasn't a show about his mom (sorry! don't get after me for my opinion!) Am I supposed to feel sorry for someone I don't know who risked her life for vanity? Then am I supposed to feel sorry for Kanye who threw the biggest shitfit during and after the VMA's because he didn't get 100% of the attention? Nope. I love Amy's music and she deserves those awards, but it's true, we sensationalize the druggies and leave out people who are just as, if not more, talented. Plus, dr, does anyone really call them "afro-americans" anymore? Really?
The Grammys is an award show about talent. If you are drugged out, you're probably less likely to maintain yourself well enough to show your talent. If you want a personality or having-one's-life-together award show, the Grammys is not going to be it. (Try the Nobel Prize, Miss America, or other scholarship programs perhaps.)
I actually think Amy Winehouse does show us all the insane life that her drug abuse was caused. Here she is, this very talented musician whose talent is respected in the music industry, and she can't get into the US to perform despite the many influential people who were pushing for her to be able to come over. Kind of makes her a loser.
i would really like to know what dr meant by that statement "it was a show for drug addicts and afro-americans" what the heck does that mean? afro-americans? black people? i thought the show was good. but Kanye yes needs to get over himself. But i would really like clarification on the drug addicts and afro-americans comment. Thats a little prejudiced if you ask me.
A little prejudiced? What Dre? Would you like us all to just bring you things and work for you and be seen and not heard? While I also think that Kanye is really annoying and over the top, I don't dislike him because of the color of his skin, but because he's an annoying show off cry baby. If he would have been shut out, you bet your butt he'd throw a fit just like at the VMS. That VMA tantrum was just flat out uncalled for and pathetic. And I don't feel that there were too many or not enough any one color, because the Grammys are about music. They aren't about color, race, or gender. I think you should just keep your prejudiced opinions to yourself. Ok?
I enjoyed Kanye's tribute to his mom. Regardless of his personality we can all relate to losing a loved one. Maybe if your mom contributed to you becoming a multimillionare selling millions of albums worldwide when the odds were against you.....you would honor her as well.
Do you think that Heath Ledger will not be honored at next years "Oscar's" because he overdosed on a handful of unprescribed pills?
Amy Winehouse is not a US Citizen and her and her fellow druggies should not be allowed here to accept an award. Let her accept her show her appreciation with another "You Tube" snort fest!
Has everyone forgotten about "Sex, Drugs and Rock n' Roll". Drugs and alcohol have been part of the music industry since long before the Grammy's came along. It's only because of the microscope celebrities are under these days, that we know know all of the dirty details. It's not that the music industry has changed, the media coverage has. Alcohol and drugs aren't going to keep me from loving the Beatles or the Rat Pack, why should it keep us from recognizing Amy Winehouse?
ANALISA: In this socially and political correct world. one is never sure of what to call people without offending them. I don't use the N word and black could be many races. As for the druggies they can sort themselves out and if anyone thinks I give a rats ass if I offend a druggie, borrow a dime and call someone who cares. Lou Rawls, Johnny Mathis, Nat Cole, Lionel Richie, Cab Calloway, Whitney Houston, Whitney before drugs, are just a "few" of the black people's music I love. I'll still say it, the show was over the top and certainly did not give everyone a good show, read it as you may. I have my $100.00 dollar tickets for Johnny the the 20th of this month, yeh! I'm a racist, thats why I paid a $100.00 to see him.
Did anyone see that frozen man pulled from the ice a few years ago? He looked just like Kanye. Whats up with that nasty smile? His mom had the same screwed up mouth. Like they were gimpy. Ha Ha. Kanye is a dork!
I love Kanye West and his performance for his mother. He is a human and people sometimes seem to forget that. No one jumps on anyone else for being so outspoken. People don't look at the big picture anymore and Kanye is exactly that. I love him and fuck anyone who doesn't. By the way it was black history month we deserved our little time!
