Drew Barrymore's Million Dollar Give
I love when celebs do good things just for the heck of it.
Drew Barrymore is one of those stars that just has a good soul. The dedicated actress announced on Monday's Oprah show that she is donating $1 million to the World Food Programme to help feed children in Africa.
"I have seen with my own eyes what a difference a simple cup of nutritious porridge can make in a child's life," the actress said. "It helps them learn, stay healthy and sets them on track for a bright future."
Drew, who became an Ambassador Against Hunger last year, has already taken two trips to Kenya to see the organization's work first hand.
And good move announcing it on Oprah's show -- get it out there! One Big Give deserves another.

When the hell is someone going to relize that we have thousands of starving/homeless people here in the USA? Makes me sick how these celebs think that by giving to another country, it makes them appear more worldy and in touch with everything. Believe me, I am not saying that there are not countries that need help, or that I do not have heart for the problems these people face, but damnit, people need help here too.

I know this will just spark another tangent from you, but in all fairness, if there WERE a decent celebrity that actually CARED about the cause they donated to, you wouldn't know because in your opinion, they're all evil for being able to make ridiculous amounts of money. So my question is... should she just keep it all for herself and not say a word? You may have countered my point already, but you OVERWHELM the eye with your incessant postings, so no one, including myself, has time to read the seemingly never-ending tirades of yours.
On a side note, I have to agree with Susan. It would be nice if Americans would help out needy Americans first. THEN donate to other countries when our citizens are all taken care of, especially the children.

Not to defend Jd. Hes a little crazy. But I saw the show on Monday. It occured to me that why should anyone pay for the commercial time when they can just donate a million or so and get a whole show to talk about the magazines, movies, and makeup? I don't think Drew is fake but there was some promoting going on there. Charity or tax deductable commercial. Maybe both.
I too like Drew very much. But all in all I have to agree with the post from Susan and some others. Charity should start at home. I've done quite a bit of traveling in the US and there are areas of the Appalachian Mountains, Midwest and south where people and kids are starving and can barely make ends meet. Elderly people can't afford heat and groceries because they get a pittance from social security. Middle and lower class American's losing their homes because they need to feed their children and have gas to go to work. People have lost their homes in floods and tornados but cannot afford to rebuild due to the outrageous price of materials and contractor costs. So many out there cannot afford health insurance, medicine or even basic needs. It sickens me that our own people are forgotten. And I fear it's only going to get worse in this country.

I agree with JD (even though I too have told him not to let his hatred for the 1% rule his life). But it is just a plain old PR stunt/tax deductible donation. Although it is a great thing that she has done, but I guarantee that she'll be making sure that she claims it in her next tax return, to just pocket the return. Plus if it was just a good old fashioned gift from the heart, then why didn't she and all the others who do these "great deeds" donate it anonymously. Why do they they feel the need to scream it from the roof tops?? It's like the show off kid yelling "hey look at me, aren't I great". People donate money all of the time and many do it anonymously. So why do these celebs always have show how "decent" they are, instead of just doing it and leaving it at that?
