Annie Leibovitz Speaks Out On Miley's Controversial Photos

miley-ny-post-b.jpg
Famed photographer Annie Leibovitz is defending her photo of Miley Cyrus, that is causing quite the uproar.

“I'm sorry that my portrait of Miley has been misinterpreted," she said in a statement, of the photos she shot for Vanity Fair. "Miley and I looked at fashion photographs together, and we discussed the picture in that context before we shot it. The photograph is a simple, classic portrait, shot with very little makeup, and I think it is very beautiful.”

Miley herself is making a big deal out the photos, along with seemingly everyone else in the world, saying that she was "embarrassed" by the final product. The Disney Channel is going even further, claiming that Vanity Fair "manipulated" the fifteen-year-old, to which the magazine adamantly denies.

"Miley's parents and/or minders were on the set all day," a rep for the mag said. "Since the photo was taken digitally, they saw it on the shoot and everyone thought it was a beautiful and natural portrait of Miley."

Personally, I think this whole thing has been blown out of proportion (see the New York Post cover above). I think the photos are fine -- not raunchy, not provocative, just fine. My problem is Miley's backpedaling. She did the shoot, she probably loved the photo, but now, because it's ruffled some feathers, she is saying she's ashamed of them. It's crap.

Seems like Ms. Leibovitz stirs the pot of controversy with her photos. Is she the world's most famous photographer because of her style/creativity or just the PR surrounding her work?

Tigger said:

Would you let your 15 year old dd pose for a picture like that?

No

so why would Billie? I don't get it
she is a kid, she needs to be dressed up as a kid, and wait until she is older to take poses like that

Cassie said:

the photos are provactive and totally inappropriate for a 15 yr old. but miley should never have posed, she's a smart girl she knew what it was , she's just back pedalling now, she's going down the same route as all other teen starlets, on the internet holding her bra strap etc. i'm sick of all this sexual carry on.

prettyinpink said:

I think the photos are completely inappropriate for someone that age. I'm sorry, a 15 year old girl should not be nude or anything close to it. Ms. Leibovitz has something of a history of convincing her subjects to pose for pictures they normally wouldn't pose for. That being said, her subjects are usually adults. It's beyond wrong for her to have even thought to have such a young girl pose like that. And it boggles my mind that her parents, grandmother, etc. would allow this to happen. Everyone except Miley should be deeply ashamed of themselves. Instead, we have a shame-faced 15 year old taking all the heat. I'm just so disgusted.

Derora said:

Miley is a prostitot!! Count the years till she's a full blown hooch

Pussycat said:

Derora, just like we counted until Britney became a "prostitot"? :) Anyways, i guess Miley is embarrassed at being caught out 'cos she had actually praised the pix herself and is only renouncing them after the backlash. The pix (tousled look after sex) are really totally inappropriate for a 15 year old.

NC said:

Sure, blame the magazine, blame a 15 year old, blame anyone but her PARENTS! If you have a child (legally meaning under the age of 18) YOU, the parent are responsible for what that child does. If you are going to point your finger, atleast point it in the right direction. Her parents thought it was acceptable, so why can no one else just accept that? Honestly, people are making this out to be much more than what it is. So what, you can see her back. The media is completely responsible for sexualizing these photos, which were clearly not meant to be sexual. They were meant to be art, so let them be art.

prettyinpink said:

NC: How can you say that these pictures were not meant to be sexual? She is rocking bed head, red lips, and a come hither look; not to mention the fact that she's wrapped in a sheet. That's not supposed to be sexual? Yeah, right. A 15 year old wrapped in a sheet is not art. It's trash.

susan said:

Her parents should be held accountable, but then again, Dad, Billy has her to thank for his "second coming" Why would he not want the all the publicity? Good or bad, press is press. The pic is nothing but sexual and very very tacky for a 15 year-old, I don't care who you are. Again, her parents should be ashamed and she should admit to what she is quickly becoming....more WhorryWood trash.

Sometimes we need to stop and think about what is really going on in this country today. Most of us complain about what these young ladies are doing and presenting them selves as, but what are we buying into and what is selling? Britney's appearance on "How I met your Mother" was their highest rated episode .... ever. Who was on the cover of all thos tabloid magazines last year? Britney. We have to start being responsible for our actions. Miley shouldn't be back pedaling so much, saying she is embarassed and its what the photographer wanted. If she was so embarassed, she shouldn't have taken her clothes off, and she wouldn't have waited until her parents were gone to take the picture.

SHAME ON LIEBOVITZ FOR TAKING P0RNO PICS OF A MINOR TO ADVANCE HER OWN PHOTOGRAPHY CAREER. ANYONE ELSE WHO TOOK SUCH PHOTOS AND POSTED THEM ON A P0RN SITE WOULD BE JAILED FOR CHILD P0RN0GRAPHY.

LIEBOVITZ SHOULD BE SENT TO JAIL.

I think a picture such as this one of a 15 yr old girl is absolutely ridiculous. I would never have posed such a way as a child and there's no way in hell I would ever allow my child to be photographed in such a way. It's not Annie Liebovitz's fault for her idea and it's not Vanity Fair's fault for publishing the photos....the blame should be placed on the parents for allowing it all to happen. That's their own problem and they should face the repercussions for their poor judgement call.
It makes them all look like 'weaker' individual's for backpeddling and saying they're ashamed and displeased with the photography when they saw it clear as day during the photo shoot. The parents exploited their daughter for their own greedy intentions. Unfortunately they forgot to keep in mind that 15 yr old girls undressing for the camera is not ok, it's disgusting and derrogatory and I hope Disney cancels any further contracts with this young girl.

Indy said:

She says she's embarassed by the photos, but yet sat for them with her top off anyway. Come on Miley. Please.

Jillian said:

Chill out, people. This is 2008, and guess what, 15 year olds are having sex. You may not like it, but it's true.

Derora and susan--Why the name calling? These pictures don't make her a prostitute or "WhorryWood trash" (huh?). She may be another young lady exploited by money-hungry parents, but she's not a prostitute.

Steff--how can you call these pictures porn? They may be suggestive, but they aren't porn. I think you and others who share that view are overreacting.

River and others who don't want to blame the photographer--how can you exonerate Annie Leibovitz completely? Like you said, it was her idea. I agree that the parents should be blamed, but I think there is blame to go around and Leibovitz and the magazine should definitely get some of it, as should society as a whole as Sarah mentioned.

Momma in MA said:

I fault the magazine for choosing Leibovitz for the photographer for this shoot. Her photographs are amazing and this is much within the character of her work. You wouldn't expect a Norman Rockwell painting from Jackson Pollock. As for Miley, she is 15!!!! Who doesn't want to feel older, desireable and savvy at 15? That doesn't mean she IS any of those things, though, and it is her parents' responsibility to protect her and slow her down so she doesn't get sucked into the Hollywood spin before she's ready. There is a reason children are called minors and are not allowed to make certain decisions for themselves. Unfortunately there may not be enough protection from parents who can't make them responsibly either.

stacey said:

Miley is 15!! Of course she's going to back pedal, say she wasn't "in the know" - because she's 15!!! Her parents are solely and completely responsible for this and I find it really disgusting that the media and basically the rest of the world are pinning this on her! No wonder we have Britney's and Lindsays - there is no way my daughter would deal with all of this pressure and turn out even half-normal!

JW said:

I still think her parents should have stopped something like this from happening. I heard someone on TV yesterday say that they were wondering if this wasn't some plan of her FATHER'S to get his career rolling again? I hadn't thought of that and I sooooo hope that is not in his plan.

A said:

Seriously people, she's a beautiful girl, and it was meant as an artistic portrait, not a tabloid of her being caught doing something. Get over it! I think it's a beautiful picture and that she is a beautiful girl. Why do you always have to judge people just because they think differently than you?

PERS0NALLY I BELIEVE THE PH0T0S ARE BEAUTIFUL BUT MILEY MADE A MISTAKE IN TAKING TH0SE PH0T0S YES SHE MESSED UP BUT WH0 ARE WE T0 JUDGE HER LIKE ANY 0NE 0F US TEENAGERS SHE MAKES MISTAKES T00 BUT ALL SHE HAS T0 D0 IS T0 CAPITALIZE 0N THIS MISTAKE. GIVE HER A BREAK PE0PLE SHE IS A HUMAN BEING AND N0 0NE, ABS0LUTELY N0 0NE IS PERFECT. Miley C0NTINUE T0 TRIUMPH 0VER ADVERSITY

Jessica said:

I think everyone should calm down on Miley, yes she is 15 but I know when I was a teenager I was no angel & I garentee that almost none of you were either. We all make mistakes but just as you teach your children you must learn from them & that is what she is now doing. I am very happy to have Miley as my daughter & my niece's hero & role model. Everyone wants thier children to also look up to them (their parents) as a rolemodel but they should look at their own mistakes! Layoff the girl she's young & like all of us she can & will make mistakes!

C. E. said:

Ok people you have to realize she is a 15 yr. girl she is bound to make mistakes. how many women can actually say that when they were that age that they didn't want to be sexy? granted you may not have acted upon it but she did. that being said i think that she should have learned from the first set of photos she took of herself. she also has to realize that she is a role model for millions af young girls. she should learn to be careful of her actions because they influence all of these young girls. I also think that her parents/ minders on the set should have said no to the idea of that photo. also the photgrapher should not have even mentioned the idea because she is a 15 yr old girl. so honestly the blame is pretty much on everyone. and to the people call her a slut and all that other garbage is just stupid on your part. calling her names and being rude is not going to change anything, it just makes you look stupid. and about her being the next britany/lindsay grow up seriously. Brittany has mental issues that she needs to work out and lindsay is getting the help she needs and is trying to be on the straight and narrow. if they werent celebrities none of you would really care. grow up

Miley,Miley,Miley,
What have you done,(or let have done to you!)My granddaughters are running out of teen rolemodels. They love you, and so do their Moms. We thought you were a strong young lady who would not surcumb to the pressures, to be trashy, that other young ladies have. Also, shame on your parents for allowing it. Remember Miley, you don't want to be exploited or thought of as a Bimbo, like the new breed of celebrities. You are talented and strongwilled. Stand up and be loved for your talent! You don't have anything to prove, so don't put yourself out there to be one of the crowd. It's not the kind of crowd, any self loving female, wants to be a part of.

I wouldn't have a problem with it if she were an older "pop star", but you shouldn't be doing that stuff when your biggest fans are 9-13 year olds. It's too imppresionable.

Im sorry but if this were just a normal 15 yr old who ever took the pictures, weither its a mother, father or professionaly done, would be in some serious trouble and facing some serious jail time. Shes under age and thats a major no no right there. And another this she IS only 15, who gives a shit if she OKed it or aproved it. she doesnt have the right to make those kinda of desisions herself yet.

I understand the hub-bub, but seriously, there are 12 and 13 year old girl MODELS who pose in less and more seductively in fashion shows and magazines like Vogue than Miley Cyrus did. Look at Milla Jovovich, who was only 12 when she started modelling! No one is outraged with the pre- and newly-teen UNKNOWN models who are on magazine covers and billboards on every street and every corner of the world! I'm not saying it's right, but it isn't anything new, either.

If a man had taken that picture and publ;ished it, he would have been arrexted for trafficking in child pornogra[hy. Whay hasn't Annie Leibovitz been arrested yet?

CONTROVERSY23 said:

how come you all fail to separate an artistic shot from the trash of the world? Jesus, this was taken by Ann Leibovitz, none of you have the slightest idea of what an honor it is to pose for her. There's nothing even mildly provocative about this picture, she's not wearing her knees as earrings as EVERY SINGLE YOUNGER GIRL IN MYSPACE does, something that should be adressed as the terrible social problem it is! quit crucifying art and focus on some serius issues, hypocritical America! Miley Cyrus is a symbol manipulated by the press and media, you are all being manipulated. Had this idiotic incident not been made public until the publication of the pics in Vanity Fair, she would not have had to backpedal, and you would not have been manipulated into thinking that the pictures are wrong.

Mum said:

Wow, what a lot of judgmental people leaving comments.

Would I let my 15 year old pose like that... well I think the photo is artistic so "yes" if it was Annie Leibovitz taking the photos and I was present I would let my daughter have a beautiful photo of herself like that... it is beautiful!!!

OK, a man who takes "poragraphic" photos of young girls (we all do know what pornographic means right??) for his own and others perverted sick reasons, yes he should be arrested as this type of person is a sick sod with not one ounce of artist in his blood. I do not need to go into to much detail about this type of so called pedophile photographer.

You should really take a look at Annie's resume then look at the sick man taking porno of teenage girls resume. Also please do compare the photos between the two.
Please tell me I am not insane in thinking there is a huge difference.

This photo of Miley was obviously shot for artistic purposes in the first place; Miley's parents were on the set. Honestly would you all say to their faces the comments you have left about them, I'd love to see it. It must be nice to hide behind a computer and judge people without even really knowing them.(Just so you know and so I am not being taken out of context I was being sarcasic I do not actually think it is nice.)

Miley and her parents liked the pose when it was being shot it was explained to them "in context" by Annie about the pose before and leading up to the shot, Miley was bullied by the press and by the public to feel ashamed, how sad.

Who are we to judge anyone for what they do in their own lives? It is up to us all to decide who or what our children watch on TV... why don't "we" be the roll models for our own children and not let TV or movie stars take the blame for what our children watch. I would rather be a more important roll model for my child than a character on TV... they are just scape goats for people who do not teach their own child what is right and what is wrong...(obviousely that comment will not bother you if you are not one of those people.)
I taught all my children, never to judge a book by it's cover and to be open minded and to realize what is real and what is not real, "we" are responsible to teach our own children right from wrong not Miley Cyrus or any other TV icon.

Miley is somebody’s child the difference about Miley is sadly she has to answer to the press and the public and to people who are judgementle.
Anyone of us out there has potential to mess up in life. Any one of our children can fall into despairggggsss ` @2 no child is immune to it, lets look out for our own before looking in other peoples business. Aslo we including our children have the luxury of it not being spread all over the news. how lucky we are.
It is the price famouse personalities pay for being....Famouse!!!

Britney spears eh? Wow!!!
I am not a huge fan of hers but I do not dislike her.
What the press did to her and what the public did to her is/was awful... I know what it is like to suffer from post natal depression and I thank the lord I did not have the press and the publics opinions of me because that would have destroyed me... think about it. So many of us felt the need to want to help Britney, she needed help, she did not deserve what she got. Think about if she was your daughter and how all that public display would have made you feel, the press hounded her and also egged her on.

Britney is a person as is Miley. Ask yourselves what makes you so much better than they are, then really look at yourself.

We are our children’s roll models, lets inform our children to make the right decisions in life based on what we teach them not based on what the whole world thinks or what someone else’s choice in life is.

It is like that age old saying if "someone" were to jump off of a Bridge would you??? Let’s give our children the opportunity to think for themselves based on what we as parents teach them and then let them decide what would they do in life.
How many different answers would there be and how many of us all will think WE are the ones with the right answer.

Miley and Annie, the posed photo shown is beautiful!!! Created by an artist with artistic intention.
