America Ferrera Takes Shots at Gossip Girl & The Hills
Here's the thing -- I really do like America Ferrera -- but just because she gets to be on Ugly Betty, which sends a really great message to young girls, doesn't mean she has to make us feel bad for watching some other guilty pleasure shows.
"Close, genuine female relationships are not what generally gets depicted in movies and TV shows," the actress says in the October issue of Seventeen. "Like, if you're watching The Hills or 90210, all the backstabbing shapes the way we act – you go to school, and you think your job is to find a sworn enemy and be jealous of each other."
America even goes as far as to dog her pal Blake Lively's, um, livelihood. "I mean, I love Blake; she’s a wonderful friend of mine, but shows like Gossip Girl kind of condition us to be mean."
The actress says she has"worked with other girls before and it was pretty catty," but admits that filming The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movies with Blake, Alexis Bledel and Amber Tamblyn was far from a typical day on the Upper East Side. America called the woman-heavy set "one of the most wonderful experiences I’ve had with girl relationships."
So, yes, certain shows portray young girls as nasty and bitchy -- but, you know what? Some are! And then there are others, like Betty, who aren't. I think girls who are watching these shows know who the "bad girl" is supposed to be. And, if they choose to go that route, it really doesn't have that much to do with if they are watching The Hills or not.
Just my opinion...

America is entitled to her opinion. I am glad she expresses something that is so true (women are catty by nature and shows make it okay).. she has a point. She's not being a goody goody.. she is just expressing herself even though Blake Lively might not like it.. too bad!
Sadly, that is true. Women and girls should stick together instead of trying to tear each other down! By the way - does her head look big compared to her body in that pic? Maybe I need glasses or something...?
Theresa - it is the angle the picture was shot that gives you that impression.
Theresa said, "Women and girls should stick together instead of trying to tear each other down!"
Then in the same paragraph, Theresa said "By the way - does her head look big compared to her body in that pic?"
I do hope you were trying to be funny, either way your hypocritical comment was totally laughable.
I'm in a workplace where all the women do is gossip about one another. I stay away from them at all costs. Shows like Gossip Girl are a problem. Girls need to learn how to be mature women and good people, not gossips and b@#$@s.
America needs to get off her pedastal and stop blaming shows for how women act naturally. Girls ARE bitchy. its not just because of shows. and its there for entertainment; i find it extremelly hard to believe that she only watches PURELY innocent shows.

I disagree. Women are not "naturally bitchy". They are taught to be that way by their mothers, sisters, teachers, TV shows...
Our society is very different than it was 100 years ago when women were just getting the right to vote. As a backlash to women's rights in our patriarchal society, the male dominated media conglomerates teach women to hate themselves and fight each other, instead of spending that energy to fight the real injustices we face in life. It's easier to hate a woman right next to you whose prettier, nicer, smarter than you than to fight the invisible people running the media. It's easier to focus on your fat or the desired amount of volume in your hair than women wearing burkas in Afganistan who would kill for the kinds of rights we have here.
Think for yourself. Whose running these teen shows? Who's demanding photoshopped pictures on magazines? Whose writing the dialogue for soap operas? Whose creating the videos for MTV? I guarantee over 85% of them are men.
Don't be a sucker sisters. Keep it real.
