Jordin Sparks Takes On Russell Brand & Purity Rings

jordinsparksmtv.jpgJordin Sparks is a good girl with good morals -- and nobody, not even the incoherent host of 2008 MTV VMAs, is going to make that look uncool.

While Russell Brand (note to MTV: please don't EVER hire him again -- for anything) continued to make terribly unfunny jokes about The Jonas Brothers and their purity rings all night, another ring-wearer, Jordan, took it upon herself to stand up for all the virgins in the house.

"I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It's not bad to wear a promise ring," Jordin told the crowd, before introducing T.I's performance, "because not everybody – guy or girl – wants to be a slut."

Hands in the air for the teen who doesn't care what people think! Jordin should be super proud of herself, as I'm sure her parents are. And for my friend Donna, who couldn't believe that the American Idol winner was as pure as she said, no Don, still, nobody has "tapped that Sparky ass."

Meanwhile, Russell, who I'm sure was forced to try and redeem himself, came back and said of purity rings, "I didn't meant to take it lightly. I don't want to piss off teenage fans. Promise rings, I'm well up for it. [But] a bit of sex, it never hurt anybody."

Oy.

Ms. Sparks made herself look like an immature child.
Her lack of respect for sexuality and other people came out load and clear when she spat out that all people who have sex are sluts.

Disgusting lil girl.

I expect that she will be seeing her CD sales plummet.

Guess what most people have sex and most do not like being called a slut.

kmac said:

it wasnt immature at all. she was sticking up for what she believes in and standing up for her friends. if you know what shes really like, it would be clear she didnt mean it the way people are taking it.
im proud of her!

Kate said:

If she didn't mean it the way she said it, she shouldn't have said it at all.

She could perhaps have rephrased it as "Not everyone is prepared to have sex, and many of us want to wait until that special moment, right after marriage to that special person."

That, at least, would have been tactful, tasteful, and wouldn't have pissed off the rest of us "sluts" who believe in test driving before purchase.

I am proud of her for sticking up for her beliefs. I think the "slut" remark was intended for the host who was making terrible remarks about the whole virgin topic. We should all be angry with him, not Jordin. With Jamie-Lynn, Bristol Palin, and the movie Juno, we need to bring our teenagers back to reality. Good for you Jordin! P.S. I bought my daughter a purity ring 2 weeks ago.

Russell Brand was a hoot. I loved him. Good God folks, he is a comedian and the fact that he made fun of anyone should have been expected. Jordan Sparks is entitled to say or do anything she pleases, just as is Mr. Brand. The fact that he called George Bush a "retarded cowboy fella" will have me loving him for the rest of my days! The VMAs suck and have for years, the only reason I watched this year was to see Russell Brand and enjoy his sense of humor. Grow up folks..funny is funny.

Fantastica said:

susan, the only reason you liked him is because you are what jordan was talking about. slutty.

Jezel said:

Yea The VMas are starting to suck I only watch for the perfomaces and even those are horrid. Jordin didn't mean ppl who have sex are sluts, she was direting that to that HORRIBLE person MTV hired as a host.... NEVER HIRE HIM AGAIN... yea the Jonas Bro virgin joke was funny the first 2 x he said it. but when u go on all night on the same topic, people start to lose intrest

susan said:

Fantastica???? All I can say is with a name like that it's got to be good. Is that not right, boys? How dare you call me a slut....you do not even freakin's know me. Bet you gave yourself that silly name as well. Grow the hell up. Let's say it all together now...everyone...F-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c-a! Sounds like a stripper to me.

I think it is really interesting how people that don't have any standards have to be accepted and their choices have to be accepted, while people who have standards or make choices that aren't maybe the most "popular" are not accepted. Looks pretty hypocritical from where I am sitting. If the tables were turned and Jordin Sparks had gotten up and said " I will go and have sex with whoever I want, whenever I want" there would have been the cheers acceptance, what she said only makes those who make other choices feel the need to defend themselves. If they are so right why do they need defending?

True enough - Russell Brand is a comedian - so one joke about the Jonas Brothers? Ok. 12 jokes about the Jonas Brothers? Ridiculous and uncalled-for.

I love Jordin Sparks and I'm proud of her for going against the grain and saying something. I honestly don't think that she was calling all people who have sex sluts. But she and the Jonas Brothers {as well as many non-famous others} are choosing NOT to have sex. Respect for a person's sexuality goes both ways -everyone seems to glorify promiscuity and doesn't respect a person's choice to abstain.

Finally! Somebody in the entertainment industry who thinks that teenagers shouldn't be having sex like most so called "teen celebs" do. Too much sexuality is thrown in the face of teens in television, music and films. Is it any wonder teens are one of the highest demographic spreading HIV?

Way the go girl! We should never let anyone get into our pants that easily. For any girl and women, VIRGINITY is GOLD.

Russell Brand is a prime example of what happens when society is dumbed down, resulting in incompetent spokesmen pandering to its lowest common denominator. Russell Brand proves that gratuitous shock value, Irreverence and cheap shots are poor substitutes for real talent. At low points in history, inferior elements often gain the ear of malcontents, enabling those like the far left, and it's shallow clique of celebrities to gain the attention of mindless lemmings who will blindly follow their counterparts like a stampeding herd, thugs in a lynch mob, or lost souls who worship a golden calf. Since these types have no real substance, luckily their existence is usually short lived.

JRE said:

Since when is it immature or shameful for a person to stand up for being a virgin? Just because a person has sex doesn't mean her or she is more mature, intelligent, saavy, or happier...and let's not pretend that having multiple sex partners doesn't create its own complications and challenges. Tired of the hypersexual culture we live in--its as if our genitals are the basis and sole purpose of our existence. Good for Jordin. She shoulda bitch-slapped the douchebag too.

Woohooo!! Go Jordin! I liked malors comment, soooo true. Why should women sell themselves to men who they don't even know if they gonna spend the rest of their lives with....wat? are you just gona try all your boyfriends out (test driving before purchase)and see which one is the best in bed! If you don't call that slutty then i don't know what is!!!
I think you should rethink about your moral beliefs, because if you can't get that one right then what CAN you get right??!!

kassi said:

The Jonas Brothers deff. deserved Jordin's comment. I am a huge Jonas Brothers fan and I am all for the purity rings :)

I wish people could take a f**king joke!! He was taking the piss, it was pretty hilarious! Americans need to get a sense of humour!
Russell would have been better off hosting the European Music awards! At least we can have a laugh!

jamie said:

Purity rings.... ehhh seen too many girls that have these things on and then "whoops" has sex with some dude, but keep the ring on so they don't look slutty. PLEASE. Now don't get me wrong, if you can actually last until marriage, good for you. However, like most people have heard, those vows are overwhelmingly broken. Just ask Brit Brit and "I'm saving myself". Meh.

rachel said:

why is everyone taking it so far? people need to get a sense of humour. russell brand is hilarious. and the jonas brothers are like an american busted. they're shit.

NLH said:

rjp3 - Jordin by no means implied that people who have sex are sluts. She was basically saying, that there is nothing wrong with promising to save your self for that special one, rather than putting it all out there for anyone & everyone...which would in most people's eyes would constitute sluttiness!!!

It's a shame more people don't have these views, as there would be a lot less unplanned pregnancies and STD's going around!!!

yoof said:

Another typically stupid 'black and white' american simplifaction of the complexities of life. So people are either 'virgins' or 'sluts' are they?... durrr....

Bit like Bush baby's classification of the countries of the world as either 'good' or 'evil'. When will they grow up?

Oh and the Jonas Brothers like it up the ass - that's why they're still virgins.

Tbh i love Russell Brand i think he's hilarious!

You can say what you like about these chastity rings, but the reasoning behind their wearing, although outwardly moralistic, stem from something slightly more sinister. They scream of indoctrination, chiefly by religion and peer pressure. Virginity should ALWAYS governed by personal motives, and in my opinion, opposing sensible sexuality in favour of following a trend or on the grounds that it is morally 'right' to remain chased seems completely absurd. If you want to preserve your virginity then all credit to you- but it should be because you aren't fully comfortable with the idea of intercourse or other completely rational personal motives, not because people will label you a 'slut' or because your friends are all doing it. These rings, to me, represent anodine herd behaviour to an extreme.

Furthermore, Brand is not representative of cultural dumbing down; far from the run of the mill substandard standup comedian, he is actually highly articulate and frequently very amusing. You can vent spleen and bandy adjectives around with wanton abandon but the implications of your message bely the fact that you are completely unfamiliar with any other aspect of Brand's work than his erratic behaviour at the VMA's.
