Adam Goldstein just couldn't beat the demons.

According to a new report, DJ AM had relapsed and was back to taking drugs in the weeks before his death. Adam had been sober for years, but recently had friends worried when his behavior become erratic.

A source for the New York Post said that AM's West Coast manager and recovery sponsor were so concerned about Adam that they flew to New York to see for themselves what was up. According to the paper, the deejay would only let his sponsor inside his apartment -- and then proceeded to light up a crack pipe in front of his pal.

"As soon as his friends, representation and his AA sponsor learned that he relapsed, which was only a couple days before he passed away, they sprung into action to try and get him to agree to go to rehab," Adam's rep confirmed to People.com.

Adam promised his sponsor that he would check himself into a California rehab facility after his scheduled Las Vegas gig on that Friday night. When AM didn't show up for his flight, friends called the police and cops found Adam dead in his apartment.

The autopsy results were inconclusive and more tests are being done -- but we can guess what the cause of death was.

Ugh. So tragic.
